"Asbestos was the main cause of occupational ill health in the 20th century"
Past Exposure to Asbestos kills over 3000 people a year in Great Britain. This number is expected to go on rising for the next 10 years. Up to 500,000 commercial, industrial and public buildings in the UK are likely to contain asbestos materials. To tackle this, legislation has been brought in since 2004 to attempt to reduce exposure to asbestos fibres through the concept of discovery and management of asbestos in non-residential buildings.
As asbestos was not fully banned until 1999, premises could still contain asbestos and there are over 2,000 recognised building products which contain asbestos, ranging from insulations through to toilet seats.
Kirkby & Diamond Chartered Surveyors can determine the risk and advise how to manage it.
It is the owner's / occupier's responsibility under the The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 act to:
- Find out whether the building contains asbestos and determine what condition it is in.
- Assess the risk, e.g. if it is likely to release fibres.
- Make a plan to manage that risk.
Kirkby & Diamond Asbestos Services include:
- Inspection of the building or premises and approved laboratory analysis of samples.
- Assessment of what will be needed practically to fulfil legal obligations.
- Recommendation of practical steps to deal with any issues which arise.
- Drawing up of a management plan, where required, to fulfil the obligations and control works.
Kirkby & Diamond will help owners / occupiers understand the regulations to manage your legal obligations and avoid the risk of prosecution. Kirkby & Diamond's Asbestos Surveyors will provide a jargon free interpretation of the results and assist in drawing up a management plan.
The required legal duty is to manage asbestos in a building, not necessarily to remove it. Kirkby & Diamond Chartered Surveyors can be your guide to compliance and peace of mind with this potentially deadly material. The firm is fully independent of the Asbestos Removal Industry so you will incur no needless and costly removal schemes.
