Revisions to the CDM Regulations (Construction, Design and Management) came in to force in April 2007.
 
Health and safety is an important issue within the construction industry but ever since the CDM regulations were introduced in 1995 they have drawn criticism for being complex and bureaucratic. This view was supported by an industry-wide consultation in 2002, resulting in the Health and Safety Executive’s decision to revise the Regulations.
 
The new, simplified CDM Regulations will bring together the existing CDM 1994 and the Construction (Health Safety and Welfare) (CHSW) Regulations 1996 into a single regulatory package. They will be supported by an Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) and industry-approved guidance.
 
Among the key changes is the replacement of the role of “Planning Supervisor” with a new position of "CDM Co-ordinator".  This new role has been introduced to support and advise the Client on their duties, in respect of health and safety matters, and to co-ordinate the design and planning of a project.
 
For many years Kirkby & Diamond have acted as Planning Supervisor under the old regulations and are now being appointed in the new "CDM Co-ordinator" role under the amended regulations.
